There Was A Time

Andrew Chester goes to his local Wilkinson’s for a job stacking shelves. He is put on cleaners. Over the shelves next door on pets, he hears a deep, deep voice talking music. He knows the voice knows what it’s talking about. He drifts over to pets and meets Lee Doyle, a Hip Hop and R&B producer with the ears of a bat. They quickly discover a shared love of Soul music. Chester tells Lee he has a bunch of acoustic songs doing nothing on his floor at home. Lee says he has been looking to work with a singer/songwriter, but not met anyone who will let him do his thing with their songs. Chester tells him he has now and the next day, gives Lee a demo of 15 tracks written in a caravan, alone, in Wales. Lee takes the demo home and has a listen. The next time he sees Chester in work, he tells him he would like to give it a go and invites him round to his house for a recording session. The recording session goes well and three months later yields an album that borrows the best of Chester and Doyle’s record collections and captures their love for sound and music beautifully.

There was a time is a TRUE Northern Soul record that defines the times we are living in.

The Album was started in Snowdonia, Wales, Christmas 2004. Furthered in Urmston, Manchester during 2006.

Finished in Stretford, Manchester, 2007. Written by Andrew Chester / Lee Doyle.

Finally committed to tape by Andrew Popplewell at 40-watt productions 2009.

Track by track guide by Andrew Chester

1. Don’t Look Back

The Lyric – About looking forward, not back

The Music – Strauss waltzes into Dr Dre as he is mixing up some fresh beats in his cooking pot. They decide to throw some melodies and words into the meal. Delicious.

2. Able

The Lyric – Rich man poor man. Man’s confusion in his role as lover and provider.

The Music – Sweet seventies soul. Millie Jackson heads over to Motown and picks up Marvin. They write this together, get stacked up and then head over to Lee’s house in Stretford…in my dreams.

3. The Rant

The Lyric – What Manchester needs as Madchester reaches the end of the line.

The Music – Off the map.

4. Take This

The Lyric – What used to sell used to be deeply uncool. Now, if it sells, it’s cool. This is very, very wrong. Music cannot and should NEVER be judged in these terms.

The Music – A ride on the Waltzers circa 1980.

5. Bothered

The Lyric – Are you bothered?

The Music – Chuck Berry and Eminem have a night out, come home pissed and do this.

6. Find Your Mind

The Lyric – Was inspired by Robert Corless of Gabrielle’s Wish. More end of Madchester emotions.

The Music – Deep Soul from the sixties dusted off and given the kiss of life. More funky than anything you will hear all year.

7. There Was A Time

The Lyric – About getting your life back on track after smoking weed all day every day for 15 million years.

The Music – A Northern Soul anthem.

8. Let’s go to A Club

The Lyric – It’s better than the pub!

The Music - Magical sweet Soul dancing to Doyli beats, in heaven.

9. Understand

The Lyric – Sometimes, you’ve just gotta demand some respect god damn it!!!

The Music – No Diggity with balls. A sparse Hip Hop soundscape with skeletal piano and angular guitar playing courtesy of Pete King.

10. Green Eyed Girl

The Lyric – I finish Green Eyed Girl at last. I am very satisfied. About love lost.

The Music – Simple snare and organ is all this beauty needs.

11. Solicitor Song

The Lyric – This is what happens after a broken home and equity.

The Music – Sweet Jane and Serge Gainsberg get it on.

12. How?

The Lyric – The questions a man asks himself after being duped.

The Music – The Thompson twins locked in Dr Dre’s best drum machine.

13. To Be Free

The Lyric – As open and honest an unrequited love song you will never hear.

The Music – Genius Electro acoustic pop with a guest appearance from MLK.

14. That’s How

The Lyric – If you are lucky enough that she listens to Green Eyed Girl and comes home.

The Music – This is just about as romantic and awe inspiring as music gets. A whirl of flutes, Spanish guitar, timpani and orchestra get you set to make up with your lover.

15. I Will Be There

The Lyric – About being away from the one you love.

The Music – As Burt Bacharach as I get.
